Games to Watch: May 23 to May 28
It is arguably the best time of the year in high school lacrosse. It is playoff time throughout the country as almost every state that is not finished is in some form of postseason play.
This week, Long Island looks to crown its Class A champions in Nassau and Suffolk County while Connecticut’s Top 4 battle it out in Fairfield County. And Ohio’s region playoffs come to completion in what will be its final season as an unsanctioned sport.
Suffolk County Class A Semifinals, May 26
Smithtown East (Smithtown) and Ward Melville (East Setauket) are the No. 2 and 4 seeds, respectively, and play in opposite brackets on Wednesday for the right to play in the final on Thursday. The rules are simple, win and move on to the state tournament, lose and go home. The Bulls and Patriots played earlier this year with Melville coming out on top 13-12. But before they can meet again they have to get past their semifinal opponent. Ward Melville plays Walt Whitman (Huntington Station), a team they beat 10-7 on May 10. Smithtown East plays Connetquot, a team they defeated 14-12 on May 7. The Bulls are riding a six game winning streak since the fell in overtime to Smithtown West, 10-9 on April 26.
Nassau County Class A Semifinals, May 25 & 26
The Suffolk County playoffs cannot be mentioned without Nassau getting a mention as well. The Top 4 seeds are all still playing when they meet on Wednesday and Thursday this week. No. 1 Syosset (No. 8 in the Downstate rankings) takes on Port Washington (Port Washington) on Wednesday in one half of the bracket. No. 2 Massapequa (Massapequa) takes on No. 3 Farmingdale (Farmingdale) on Thursday in the other half. The final will be played on May 31 at Hofstra University. Syosset beat Port Washington 13-4 in their only meeting this year on May 6. Massapequa defeated Farmingdale 10-9 on May 6.
FCIAC Finals (Connecticut), May 26
The semifinals of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference features the Top 4 teams in the 3d Rising Connecticut rankings. Darien (Darien) takes on Staples-Westport (Westport) in one half of the bracket on May 24. Darien got the better of their first meeting, 17-5 on May 3. New Canaan (New Canaan) looks for revenge on Ridgefield (Ridgefield) in the other half of the bracket on Tuesday. Ridgefield defeated New Canaan 7-3 on May 17 in their only meeting this year.
Ohio High School Lacrosse Association Region Finals, May 28
Ohio heads into its final year as an unsanctioned sport with several teams in the 3d Rising State-by-State Rankings vying for region titles. The busiest region is the Central Region with Upper Arlington (Columbus), Dublin Coffman (Dublin) and Dublin Jerome (Dublin) all in the final four. No. 1 St. Xavier plays Mason (Mason) on May 24 in the Southwest Region final four. Once the region finals are complete the teams move on to the Division I semifinals, which will be June 1.
