Under the Radar: Austin Popovich, M, St. Francis DeSales (Ohio)/Resolute '16
Over the last few months, 3d Rising writers and evaluators have seen hundreds of hours worth of lacrosse spanning late summer into the winter, attending recruiting tournaments and showcases nationwide.
Along the way, we've collected a list of who we view as some of the best uncommitted players, primarily in the 2015 and 2016 classes, with a few 2017s as well.
Today we start our Under the Radar series, which will feature commentary from club coaches on some of their best players still looking for a future college destination. We'll include highlight videos too.
First up is a talented, exciting playmaker from the Buckeye State. Austin Popovich attends St. Francis DeSales in Columbus and is a dangerous midfielder with a strong combination of size (6 foot 2, 175 pounds) and speed and a monstrous winding shot. Using his athleticism and aggressive style of play, Popovich is able to consistently break down defenders and find open space to let it fly with accuracy and heat.
He recently demonstrated chemistry with some of his high school while putting on a strong performance for Resolute at the NDP Lacrosse Tournament of Champions.
Popovich, who was on the Midwest Under Armour All-America Underclass roster in 2014, is receiving interest from the likes of Maryland, Navy, Hofstra, Fairfield and more. Hereís what Popovich's club team director and coach Matt Lee had to say about him:
"Austin is a strong dodger with the ability to create and get his own shot. He has benefited from our indoor box training as his two-man game in tight spaces has made him a more dynamic player. His big shot and dodging draws the attention of the defense as Popovich can dodge the pole. He makes everyone around him a better player."
