Champion Lacrosse Hosts Second Annual 3Nation Lacrosse Classic
BUFFALO — Champion Lacrosse today announced the second annual 3Nation Lacrosse Classic at the Buffalo Bills’ New Era Field on Oct. 22-23. Middle school and high school players from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Ontario will play in the event that will showcase some of the top Native American, United States and Canadian lacrosse recruits.
“We’re excited to bring back this great lacrosse event to New Era Field after a successful first run last fall,” said Bruce Popko, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Pegula Sports and Entertainment. “It’s great to be able to bring in elite student-athletes from Canada, the Iroquois Nation and Central and Western New York to experience all the history and excitement of New Era Field.”
Hosted by Champion Lacrosse and powered by Martin Sports, the event plays the middle school division (high school classes of 2023-2021) on Saturday, Oct. 22, and JV (2019, 2020) and Varsity (2018, 2017) on Sunday, Oct. 23. Among the 26 teams participating are Allegany Arrows, Blaze, CNY Roadhawks, Edge Ontario, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Grand River Ironmen, Hamburg, Hill Academy, Orange Crush, Western Door and Western Royals. Each team will get at least one game in New Era Field.
“We can’t thank the Buffalo Bills enough for providing this amazing opportunity for top prep lacrosse players in the region to play at this world-class venue,” said the founder of Buffalo-based Champion Lacrosse Joe Smith, who last year completed his second stint as a defender for the U.S. National Indoor Team. “The chance to play lacrosse in an NFL venue is extremely special, so we’re grateful to be able to grow this event in year 2 to include even more top clubs and players.”
Last year’s event, called the Ameri-Can Classic, featured 19 teams and brought 20 college coaches to recruit at the former Ralph Wilson Stadium.
“Buffalo has a unique ability to draw top lacrosse talent from the Northeastern U.S., Canada and the Iroquois Nation, making the 3Nation Lacrosse Classic truly an international event,” said 3Nation Lacrosse Classic co-founder John Jiloty. “And while we were blown away by the talent on the field last year, to sell out in Year 2 says a lot about the Bills’ venue and the thriving lacrosse community in the region.”
Originally opened in 1973, New Era Field has a capacity of 71,608. In 2013, a $130 million construction project was unveiled that included renovations and improvements, such as new technology implementation, a new west end plaza that is inclusive of a new team store and enhanced gate entries, renovated and expanded concessions, restrooms and a training facility. Champion Lacrosse held its 2016-17 tryouts at New Era Field in September.
